About the estate
The family-run Mader Jean-Luc estate in Hunawihr, Alsace, manages a highly fragmented vineyard area of 10.6 hectares, which includes parcels in the Rosacker and Schlossberg grand cru sites. Jean-Luc and Anne Mader took over the vineyards in 1981 and resumed wine production, later being joined by their son Jérôme in 2005 after his oenological studies. The limestone, marly-limestone, and sandstone soils shape the various Alsatian grape varieties, often imparting characteristics suitable for long aging to the wines. The estate has been converted to organic farming since 2007, strictly avoiding chemical products and utilizing natural methods for weed control through mowing and ploughing. Harvesting is carried out manually, followed by whole-bunch pneumatic pressing, low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and maturation on the lees.
