About the estate

The Leonhard Huppert estate located in Gundersheim, Rhenish Hesse, is the world's first winery to utilize Terra Preta in viticulture. To address climate change challenges and maintain sustainable soils, the winery produces this special black earth by hand itself. Regional organic waste such as green cuttings, horse manure, rock flour, and self-produced biochar are fermented for this purpose. Applying this earth in the vineyards increases the humus content, stores CO2 in the soil, and improves water retention capacity. In addition to winemaking, the estate also offers camper parking spaces in the surrounding area.
