About the estate
The Hacienda El Ternero estate has a history dating back to 1077 and is directly linked to the Cistercian monastery of Santa María La Real de Herrera. The winery buildings from the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries once served as a monastery, barracks, school, and pilgrim hospital on the Way of Saint James. Spanning 250 hectares of vineyards in one of the highest areas of the Rioja DOCa, the estate cultivates grape varieties including Tempranillo, Viura, Garnacha, and Mazuelo. The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of 650 meters, protected by the Obarenes Mountains, featuring shallow clay-limestone soils mixed with pebbles. Within the historic estate, the wines rest in French oak barrels to ensure the expression of the terroir.
