About the estate
The Schmelz estate has been run as a family business for 150 years in the heart of the Wachau in Joching near Weißenkirchen. Cultivation takes place in steep terraced vineyards with a variety of soils, producing wines under the Wachau DAC denomination. The winery is a founding member of the Vinea Wachau association and produces its wines using the traditional quality categories Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd. The vinification combines consistent, quality-oriented work in the vineyard with gentle modern processing of the grapes. Among the estate's well-known single-vineyard sites are Ried Pichl Point, Ried Steinwand, Ried Steinriegl, Ried Klaus, Ried Höhereck, Ried Steinertal, Ried Loibenberg, and Ried Kollmitz.
