About the estate
The Obstbau & Kelterei Schmitt estate manages orchards in the area around Merzig that have been family-owned for over a hundred years. The sunny slopes facing the Saar were once used as vineyards before becoming tree orchards following the phylloxera infestation. Apples, pears, quinces, mirabelles, plums, and cherries now thrive on fertile shell limestone soils with a wide variety of cultivars. The meadow fruit meets the guidelines for organic farming and is processed in the estate's own press house. The product range includes juices and the regional apple wine known as Viez, as well as sparkling wines, spirits, vinegars, and fruit spreads.
