About the estate
The Monte da Casteleja estate was founded in 1999 by Guillaume Leroux on a property inherited from his grandfather in southern Portugal. The name originates from archaeological discoveries of Roman ruins and historical evidence of winemaking on the site. On clay-limestone soils and in close proximity to the sea, the estate cultivates local and rare grape varieties such as Bastardo and Perrum under certified organic production. Farming is conducted without artificial drip irrigation to encourage deeper roots and a slow, prolonged maturation. In the cellar, traditional methods such as manual harvesting, whole-bunch fermentation, and foot-treading in lagares are combined with modern winemaking techniques.
