About the estate
The Adega Cooperativa de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo estate is situated at the foot of the Serra da Marofa and continues a winemaking tradition initiated by Cistercian monks in the twelfth century. Founded in 1956 by 154 members, the cooperative currently has 350 associates who annually deliver approximately 6.5 million kilograms of grapes. This results in an average annual production of about 4.8 million liters of wine, consisting of 55 percent white and 45 percent red wine. The vineyards are located within the Beira Interior DOC in the Castelo Rodrigo subregion, which features a continental-mediterranean climate and soils dominated by schist and sandstone. The predominant grape varieties cultivated in the region include Síria, Malvasia Fina, Arinto, and Fonte Cal for white wines, alongside Mourisco, Marufo, Rufete, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz for reds.
